Dairy Danger


            Most Americans are raised to believe in certain ideologies, only to realize later that these beliefs may be half-truths, propaganda, or totally false. The belief that milk and dairy products are beneficial to the human body is an example of this occurrence. Milk and other dairy products are not healthy for human beings, and on the contrary, are actually quite detrimental to our health.
             Ever since childhood, most people are brainwashed with messages like "milk does a body good," and "Got Milk?" This repetitious messaging forces most people to accept the myth that dairy products are healthy, and so they fail to ask for evidence of these claims. It is quite possible, however, that there is no valid evidence to support the views of the American Dairy Association, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Department of Agriculture. It is a multi-billion dollar industry. These organizations are reaping the rewards of a misinformed public, and doing their best to keep the ship of truth at bay. .
             There are many myths surrounding the dairy debate, but they must be tackled one at a time. The first myth is that dairy products are essential because of their calcium content. It is true that milk and other dairy products are high in calcium, however; this is a redundant argument. Calcium deficiencies (meaning insufficient ingestion) are unheard of in the medical world, and experts say it is almost impossible to not consume enough calcium, even without dairy products. .
             Let us be hypothetical for a moment. Imagine a world where calcium deficiencies were a problem. Dairy products would be a terrible source of this nutrient. Dairy products--milk for instance, is the equivalent of liquid meat. Milk is extremely high in protein. Scientific evaluations show that excessive protein intake is correlated with calcium malabsorption and calcium loss. This shows that because of the high protein levels in dairy products, the calcium in them is essentially doing nothing.
