On Benny's first day at the university, Eve meets Benny in front of the school. They are involved in an accident. A car hits a boy on a motorcycle, slides and pins Eve to a light pole. Eve spends the next week in the hospital with a concussion, and some cracked ribs. This is where they meet Nan for the first time; she was a witness to the accident. Eve talks to her "mother" and Nan about her situation and they all convince her that she should get the money from the Westwards. She walks right up to the house one day and demands the money from them, and comes right out and tells them that it is not a loan; she does not plan on paying the money back.
Both the book and the movie include the love story of Benny and Jack. They meet at school and become friends, and fall in love. The university is holding a dance, and the guys all decide to have a party at Jack's home before the dance. Since the boys cannot decide what girls they want to ask they all go together as a group. Benny sits alone at the table until the end when Jack finally asks her to dance. This is where the similarities end. In the book Jack calls the next day and invites her to lunch. Knowing that in the past lunch has meant her, Jack, and all of their friends, she didn't get too excited about it until she finds out that is was to be the two of them. This was the turning point from friendship to relationship. In the movie it is a slower process. They do this for effect.
The relationship between Benny and Jack is the same in both the movie and the book. It is a difficult relationship, because Benny has to catch the ten past six bus every evening, and most of the socials and goings on all happen later in the evening. The only time they get to see each other is in class, and an occasional lunch. The hardest part of their relationship was when Benny stayed home with her mother to help her run the shop after her father died.
