Coaching Styles


Coaches who uses this style are either lack the knowledge to instruct the athletes what do and/or they are too lazy to meet the demands of there responsibility as a coach. (Martens) The submissive style of coaching is not one of the well regarded of the coaching style but it has to be incorporated within every coaching style.
             An example of the submissive style of coaching is my high school tennis coach. Back in high school, my tennis coach would use the submissive style of great deal in my high school tennis career. All my coach did was let the captains run the practice while she just sit there and wouldn't coach the team. Since she didn't have the knowledge of the game of tennis, she couldn't organize practices or come up with strategies for the team. Therefore, the submissive style of coaching worked for her.
             The cooperative style of coaching is when the coaches share the decision making with athletes according to Martens. (Martens) This is style of coaching is more of teaching setting and allows the athlete to have some margin of error. In the cooperative style of coaching, fundamentals are being taught more. These coaches who practice the cooperative style has provide their team to set their own goals and to strive to achieve them. The coach has a difficult task in deciding how much structure creates the optimum climate for the athlete's development. (Martens).
             An example of a coach who uses the cooperative style of is Brad Gilbert, Andre Agassi's former tennis coach. According to Brad Gilbert, the author of Winning Ugly, the best style of coaching is the cooperative style. By teaching the player the fundamentals, they will receive a better understanding of what they need to be successful. (Gilbert) Gilbert is a firm believer that you don't yell or scream at your player. You show you"re the player wrong he or she is doing wrong and you work on it so that it wont happened again.
