Esteban bent over backwards in order to please Clara .
Angela also has a tremendous influence over the main male characters in the novel. This is shown when she is questioned about who she had lost her virginity too, and for her own reasons she said Santiago Nasar. In the novel, it shows that Angela takes her time to think of the name of the man who took her virginity2. This might suggest that she is unsure about her answer, and that Santiago Nasar might not even be the man who did it. This decision that she made has greatly affected Santiago Nasar because once Angela's brothers found out about it, they went out to kill Santiago Nasar.
Clara and Angela's influence does not only affect the men in the family. Their influence is powerful enough to affect the direction of the plots of both novels since through the males they influence, the direction that the plot takes. These two female characters have portrayed actions and influences that affected the plot to the extent that their actions have been felt throughout their respective novels. Clara influences the plot in "House of Spirits" when Esteban becomes more humble and realizes that he has lost Clara the night he hit her and since then she has not spoken to him. Clara does not tell him about her feelings but rather withdraws in to silence and thus portrays this image for Esteban to take as a form of a victory. Esteban also does not understand Clara and thus he struggles to win back her favor without ever succeeding. .
And in "Chronicle of a death foretold" through Angela's confession, which she stated that Santiago Nasar was the one that took her virginity, the whole plot of the novel was formed. When she said that Santiago Nasar was the one who took her virginity, her twin brothers, pig butchers by trade, pick up their tools and set out to revenge their sister's lost honor by killing Santiago Nasar. This also affected Angela's brother, because when they went out to get their families honor back by killing Santiago Nasar, they were also a victim because they were arrested for what they did.
