Rural townships had 50,000 commune hospitals with 740,000 beds and 1.02 million health workers. According to the CIA World Fact Book there are approximately 1,284,303,705 people living in China, as of July 2002. The growth rate is estimated at 0.87 percent per year, which accounts for 15.85 births per 1,000 people. The death rate is 6.77 deaths per 1,000 people and the infant mortality rate is 27.25 deaths per 1,000 people. The life expectancy at birth for the total population is 71.86 years. However, like most societies women tend to live longer than men, with males average life expectancy being 70.02 years and females life expectancy being 73.86 years. The total fertility rate is 1.82 new born children per woman. Compared to the rest of the world there is a relatively small occurrence of HIV and AIDS in the nation with, as of January 2001, approximately 1.25 million people living with the disease and approximately 17,000 deaths per year resulting from the epidemic (Fact Book). .
To compare, the United states has a population growth of 0.89 percent however its death rate and infant mortality rate is much lower that China's.
