Charles V came in to rule with strong heredity lines, which gained him much power and control over large amounts of land. He was also a very capable ruler who competently stopped revolt after revolt in many different areas of his rule while also expanding his empire farther. After conquering much territory and putting down revolt after revolt Charles retired from his thrown of Holy Roman Empire and all his other territories.
Charles came into power with the death of his father Phillip the handsome. His heredity was rich with princes and emperors who were all very competent and gained much land while they were in power. His grandparents on his father's side were Maximilian I and Mary of Burgundy. On his mother the Infanta Joanna's side was Ferdinand and Isabella. That was to say that by the time he resigned he was ruling over the different territories of Spain, Southern Italy, New World, his land as Holy Roman Emperor, and as Duke of Burgundy in upper Europe close to France and Germany (Brandi 23). .
Charles began his rule in 1515 as the Duke of Burgundy. Then after the death of King Ferdinand in Spain the Castile Empire of Spain was open to new rule. First, it was debated on who would rule the territory and the Spanish did not want Charles V to take over but after help from his future father-in-law the King of Portugal, and because of being the Grandson of King Ferdinand he became the ruler of the Spanish empire. With the taking over of Spain Charles also gained not only the whole Spanish empire, but also inherited his mothers possessions of land in the New World, and the Spanish run territories in Italy and other small provinces in the area (Brandi 26). This caused Charles without a doubt the most problems. Charles was originally from Burgundy and that was where he had truly loyal subjects and help ruling. Everywhere else that he inherited land, his subjects where against him saying that he was from Burgundy and regardless of what he inherited, he had no right and was not capable to rule countries that he had never been too or had no knowledge of.
