Bioinformatics

An area of main societal concern includes the fairness in use of genetic information by insurers, employers, courts, schools, adoption agencies, and the military, among others. Privacy and confidentiality, psychological impact and stigmatization, reproductive issues, conceptual and philosophical implications, and health and environmental issues are also among many other concerns that linger as we advance day by day in the study of bioinformatics.11.
             II. Hardware.
Present development of biotechnologies leads to the impressive increase both in the volume of available data and in the complexity of data types which are used by medicine companies, agriculture, and researchers. The companies which are doing research on human genome need to store a considerable amount of data generated by the research. The databases used actually by the companies, like Oracle, Sybase, or DB2 count on indexes to give a better performance. The access to biological data is slow because these sequences are accessed as a data stream, and these databases index only some type of data. With the development of new data types, we need to develop new data technologies.
Data Storage requirement for the Sanger Institute .
The Sanger Institute is one of the leading genomics centers in the world, dedicated to analyzing and understanding genomes. The Sanger Institute's programs support biological and medical research worldwide. Formerly the Sanger Center, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute was founded in 1993 by the Wellcome Trust and the UK Medical Research Council (MRC). .
The Sanger Institute is a major human genomic research facility, and it needs a high-capacity, strong IT infrastructure to support its growing data center, numerous high-density server farms and rapidly increasing data storage requirements. The institute put in place an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)-based network several years ago. With the increasing of its data requirements, the organization needed more capacity.
