Aim: To calculate the density of a regular shaped object using a beam balance.
Apparatus: Physical beam balance, vernier calliper, weight box & a given object, .
Theory: Density is important and characteristic property of matter. Density is the measure of the compactness of a body. After making independent measurements of mass and volume, Density is calculated by the mass per unit volume of a substance. .
Density = Mass .
Volume.
Where Volume = l x b x h .
l = length of the block.
b = breadth of the block.
h = height of the block .
Procedure: To find the dimensions, l, b, h, of the object; we use a vernier calliper. Record zero error, if any. Place the block on one of the plates on the beam balance. Make sure that the beam balance is correctly balanced by making sure that the pointer indicates zero on the scale. On the other plate, taking the standard weights from the weight box, we measure the mass of the block. This is done by placing the weights in such a manner that it is proportional to the weight of the block which can be determined when the pointer moves left as well as right in equal distance. Record the mass of the block. Determine the volume by the formula l x b x h. Finally, divide the mass by the volume to find the density of the block. .
Observation table: .
Least count of the vernier calliper: 0.1mm = 0.01cm.
Zero error of the vernier calliper: 0.0mm.
Mass of the rectangular block: 24.66 mg .
