Atomic Bomb

Very few lives would have been lost, Japan would not have dared to defy USA, and it would have saved the United States from criticism. Japan was completely unaware of what they were up against. Instead of using the atomic bomb they could have used the napalm bomb, which were efficient in destroying key transportation and communication targets and it would not affect future generations with radiation. They had already dropped napalm on the city and it had caused approximately 100 000 deaths, which just strengthened the point that the United States already had Japan at their mercy. Military men took a more selfish approach to the bombing. They weighed a comparitive small amount of American military casualties to justify aproximatly 400 000 innocent Japanese deaths. By examing the following quote from Carl Spaatz, the man ordered to drop the first atomic bomb, it is clear that Japan was already defeated and their primary concern was surrendering terms rather than innocent woman and children's lives at steak. "If we were to go ahead with the plans for a conventional invasion with ground and naval forces, I believe the Japanese thought that they could inflict very heavy casualties on us and possibly as a result get better surrender terms - .
By examining President Truman's personal diary it is clear that he believed the bomb should have been dropped on military targets only. "This weapon is to be used against Japan between now and August 10th. I have told the Sec. of War, Mr. Stimson, to use it so that military objectives and soldiers and sailors are the target and not women and children. Even if the Japs are savages, ruthless, merciless and fanatic, we as the leader of the world for the common welfare cannot drop that terrible bomb on the old capital or the new."" .
This shows that Truman had been directly challenged use of the bomb and shows he should have taken more control over its usage.
