Abortion: Murder or Mercy?

This type of abortion is usually performed during the first trimester of pregnancy. One type of partial birth abortions Dilation and Extraction (D&X) is done by partly delivering the baby feet first, leaving the head inside (Description). Then with a sharp instrument, the head is bashed, and the brains are sucked out killing the baby that is then pulled out the rest of the way. For the other partial birth abortion, Dilation and Evacuation (D&E), the baby is poisoned during the second trimester. The next day, the doctor twists and tears off the baby's limbs using forceps with sharp teeth. The head is too big, so it must be crushed remove (Description). There are a few other types of abortions where the baby is poisoned and then delivered, one being Saline Instillation (Salt Poisoning). One of the other kinds is Prostaglandin Instillation, which makes the mother have very strong contraction that crush the premature baby that is then delivered dead (Description). A newer way to carry out an abortion is by taking oral medication called mifepristone that causes a spontaneous abortion in a few days. There are many ways to kill the unwanted babies, some are justified by the court, and mostly accepted if there is an inconvenient situation then they are deemed viable. .
There has been much controversy over the laws concerning abortion. Whether it should be legal or not and how developed of a fetus should be illegal to perform an abortion on. The law says that in the first trimester, if the woman decided to have an abortion, she can do so with consent of her doctor. In the second trimester or when the fetus is viable (able to live outside the womb), all abortions are prohibited unless in a case where the woman's health or life would be endangered (Butler 249). So, it is said that how far along a pregnancy is determines whether a baby is human and has the right not to die or is deprived of it.
