Ancient Greece

How can two societies that are only approximately 200 miles apart and ruled around the same time really differ that much. Well, actually, they can differ quite a bit. The Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations, which were roughly from 1900 B.C. to 1300 B.C., did have some similarities like the elegant detail of their art and how they both evolved to using the class society of nobles down to laborers. But amazingly enough these two cultures were completely different in their architecture, advancement, and their ways of life in general.
Huge, wide open, and on the top of an artificial hillside sat the Palace at Knossos. It was there for everyone to see, with wide open courtyards and no walls guarding the compound. This was where King Minos of the Minoan civilizations lived. They were not trying to hide anything from anybody about where their king's complex was. In the palace there was an unprecedented advanced plumbing system, beautifully decorated walls and paintings, and one of the most intricate designs of a palace ever found. The Palace at Knossos exposed more about this empire than any other artifact found in the area. The beauty of the art that was found on the walls was remarkable; it showed their love of painting and embellishment. This was a very peaceful and passive society.
On the other end of the spectrum sat the Citadel of the Mycenaean domain. This has massive double-sided walls, enormous wide gates at the entry, and two nine foot lions guarding the entrance to intimidate anyone who dares to attack. This king's lair is almost incognito and purposely hidden from outsiders. The architectural design is geared for defense rather than to show off like the Minoans. The inside of the Citadel does not even compare to the design of the Palace. It is very basic and not very good plumbing and drainage systems. There is however some narrow escape passages to exit in case of attack. The Citadel is very small and confined, with many things closely laid out to save space and to keep the design as small as possible.
