Anabolic Steroids

.
According to the N.I.D.A (National Institute on Drug Abuse) anabolic steroids is the familiar name given to synthetic substances related to the male sex hormones know as androgens. They promote the growth of skeletal muscle, which is called an anabolic effect, as well as the development of male sexual characteristics, which is called an androgenic effect. It is these two pieces of the puzzle put together that leads to the proper term given to the compounds: "Anabolic Androgenic Steroids". They were developed in the 1930's to treat a condition known as hypogonadism in which the male testes do not produce a sufficient amount of the male hormone testosterone for normal growth, development, and sexual functioning.
It was during the late 1930's when scientists discovered that the anabolic steroids were also promoting the growth of the skeletal muscle in their patients. It was this event that lead to the first use of the compounds by bodybuilders and weightlifters. Which paved the way to the use of them by other athletes in a wide variety of competitive sports. Steroid use had become so popular that it began to affect the outcome of organized sports all around the globe. On March first 1991 the Federal Anabolic Control Act was established and put immediately into effect. They were put on the schedule 3 of the controlled substances act, making them illegal without a prescription. (N.I.D.A Research Report).
             Mental Effects and Addiction.
Anabolic Steroids are extremely dangerous to one's mental health on a number of different levels and in a number of different ways. For starters, they increase a risk of mood swings and disturbances, which includes mania and severe depression. They increase the risk of psychosis, and finally they increase the level of aggressive acts, which of course can possibly injure one's self or the others around him/her. I had the opportunity to sit down and have a face-to-face interview with Mrs.
