For my coursework I have chosen to explore hypotheses about Heart Pulse Rates. I will be collecting data to prove or disprove each hypothesis. To help me I have taken a random sample of 50 people from year 7 through to year 11. I have randomly chosen 5 boys and 5 girls from each year so that my data is an unbiased representation of the school. I chose 5 people at random by giving each student a number then using the random number key on my calculator. .
I gave each student a questionnaire to fill in about his or her health. I also took their pulse rate 4 times. Initially before any exercise and then again after I made him or her run a set length of 50 metres. After that they had a 5-minute rest after which I took their pulse. Finally they ran the set length once more and then their pulse was taken down and I calculated the average of the four readings. .
An example of my questionnaire is:.
Age: 14.
Gender: Female.
Year: 9.
How many hours of exercise a week do you do? 3.
Do you smoke? Yes.
Do you drink alcohol? Sometimes.
How often and how much? Not very often, mainly special occasions and a little.
Describe what you eat in a typical day? Toast, sandwich, crisps, chocolate, apple, chips, beans, etc.
Have you been ill in the past week? No.
Have you had or do you have any injury in the last week? No.
Do you suffer from asthma or any other airways related disease? No.
To make my experiment fair I have chosen not to include people who .
Have been ill in the past week.
Are injured or have been injured in the past week.
Have taken illegal recreational drugs or had alcohol within the last 24hours.
Have asthma or any other airway diseases .
Hypothesis One.
.
People who lead a healthy life and regularly take part in exercise will have a lower pulse rate after exercise in comparison to those who lead an unhealthy lifestyle.
This hypothesis is based upon the fact that when you do a high amount of exercise, eat healthily and lead a generally healthy life then your heart will be stronger giving you a lower pulse rate than those who lead an unhealthy life style.
