Affirmative Action

Discrimination was not allowed when African Americans were the ones getting the short end of the stick. Therefore many believe it should not be allowed when whites are discriminated against. Two wrongs don't make a right. Affirmative action in colleges is a good example of the discriminating view. At ivy league colleges the median GPA of applicants is close to 4.0 and S.A.T. scores are close to 1300, minorities are let in with GPA's less than 3.0 and S.A.T. scores less than1000. The only way for colleges to achieve ethnic proportions is to downplay or abandon merit criteria and to accept students from typically under represented groups over better qualified students. Affirmative action is allowing undereducated citizens to get into college when the people that are qualified are not getting accepted when they should be. When we passed the equal opportunities law, it did not mean treat people differently, it means we should treat all people as equals. In some cases affirmative action does not treat everyone as equals. Some say that if we lower acceptance standards for minorities, we should lower standards for everyone. Since nobody would do that we should raise the standard for minorities. .
Many Americans are extremely ignorant to the Affirmative Action program. Many feel that Affirmative Action only pertains to African Americans when it reaches so many more. The maintenance of the program is of great importance to our country. It is of utmost importance that we as a society learn about the program and its benefits so we can prepare for the future, and eventually erase racial and gender issues in every aspect of our country. The plan is tailored to the employer's work force and the skills available in the labor force. It prescribes specific actions, goals, timetables, and responsibilities and describes resources to meet identified needs. The plan is a comprehensive results oriented program designed to achieve equal employment opportunity rather than merely to assure nondiscrimination.
