Legalizing Marijuna

A daily user of marijuana researched and found that in 1990 alone, 390,000 Americans were arrested on marijuana related charges."" (The Economist 1) This means our police are out on patrol searching for people that are in the possession of marijuana, instead of looking for criminals and murderers that are hurting the lives of others. Our nation is such and we don't have enough police force to tackle every task that comes. The duty of a police officer is to protect the lives of others. They are not really protecting us when they are focusing on searching for marijuana victims. Marijuana is a harmful drug, yes I agree, but people are doing it illegally anyway. Not like they are going to stop because it is illegal. Why is everyone out to seek for drug-dealers? The amount of money that our nation is spent on trying to get a zero-tolerance for illegal drugs is absurd. Study after study, has shown us that regular usage among people is increasing; and even the federal government admits that approximately 26 million Americans use marijuana daily'(Leshner 2)A victim of the drug Joe Nickell states, "The problem with drug prohibition is that it is fairly lauderable intentions-the desire to increase productivy, preserve public safety, and protect the welfare of innocents "yet the end results of prohibition is the undermining of these goals."" The amount of time and money spent, the results were very unsuccessful. "We are all speaking of a plaque that consumes an estimated $75 billion per year of public money, exacts an estimated $70 million a year from consumers, is responsible for nearly 50 percent of the million Americans in jail today, occupies an estimated 50 percent of the trial time of our judiciary, and takes the time of 400,000 policemen - yet a plaque for which no cure is at hand, nor in prospect."" (Nadelmann 2) Regardless of what any law states, the people using marijuana and other illegal drugs are going to continue using it.
