A Dry County

Alcohol has played a major role in the social life of many people. From the beginning of time, our ancestors have consumed it in spiritual and entertainment manners. Alcohol has also led to the destruction of many lives. I find it very intriguing why the county of Lubbock, TX would pass a law prohibiting the sale of alcohol at any location except restaurants and bars, when people can purchase it right on the edge of the next county. I have pondered over this topic in order to accumulate information that might give some reasonable explanation into the contradicting views of this subject.
The role of alcohol in the lives of people varies. Many abuse it and cause problems. Some consume it and go on perfectly fine. When and where do we come to a conclusion on a county banning the sell of alcohol except in bars and restaurants? I have thought of many possibilities from both sides. We will first look into why Lubbock is dry. I have perceived on the notion that maybe the county of Lubbock views alcohol as a corruptor among those under the legal drinking age of twenty-one. The county is submerged in young people who attend Texas Tech, a national university. Jimmy Noland, school superintendent of the town New Deal, and a well-respected gentleman had this to say about his town becoming wet. "I"m against it," he said. "I don't think it would be good for our city, especially so close in proximity to our campus"(Lubbock Avalanche-Journal). In some eyes the removal of alcohol from the county makes it harder for those to purchase it, cutting down on the number of people who drink. Some view this as correct, and others simply say it doesn't stop them at all. Jimmy Noland had this to say about the proximity of alcohol. "I think the abuse of alcohol by both adults, and those who are underage, is a major concern," he said. "But being so close in proximity certainly can't help"(Lubbock Avalanche-Journal).
