Creativity, the ability to go beyond traditional ideas, rules or patterns to create meaningful new ideas, forms or methods. Virginia Woolf, in her work A Room of One's Own, claims that women have a creative power that differs substantially form that of men. I think creativity itself is the same, just the way it is developed that makes all the difference. Everyone can be as creative as they want, no matter which sex they are, but if they are not encouraged to think critically and express their thinking, it stops the development of creativity. A Room of One's Own exhibits the different degree of encouragement on creativity to men and women. In this essay, I am going to give a brief explanation of Woolf's argument about the difference between men's creativity and women's creativity, and on into defend my viewpoint against hers by discussing the different development in creativity between men and women in A Room of One's Own. .
In order to discuss men's creativity and women's creativity in A Room of One's Own, a brief explanation of Woolf's argument on this matter is necessary. Woolf argues that the creativity of men and women is greatly different, and thatit would be a thousand pities if women wrote like men? for if two sexes are quite inadequate, considering the vastness and variety of the world, how should we mange with one only?? (Chapter 5, p.87) She means that the difference between men's creativity and women's creativity is good fro enhancing the richness and variety of the world. But she does not tell what the difference is men's creativity and women's. While she certainly thinks that have equal creative power, she admits that men and women have different minds, different creativity, and that naturally write in different styles. .
From my viewpoint on creative power, creativity itself is the same, just the way it is developed that makes all the difference. Different people have different levels and abilities of creativity.
