Human Cloning

The cell was fed only 5% of the food it normally uses so it could only persevere. The two cells were placed next to each other and a small jolt of electricity was given so they can merge and divide. After about six days, the resulting embryo was implanted in the uterus of another ewe. After a pregnancy period, the pregnant ewe gave birth to a lamb named Dolly that is genetically identical to the original donor (Science). .
Over the past decade or so, other scientists have produced genetically identical copies -clones-- of animals by dividing embryos (Science). But this was the first time anybody had made adult mammal genes behave like genes in a fertilized egg. Dr. Ian Wilmut, regarding the purpose of cloning of the sheep, said he was just trying to modify sheep to produce valuable drugs in their milk. Other scientists said the technique could be used to create animal models for human disease for scientific study. Cloning might also be used to genetically alter pigs so their organs could be transplanted to humans (Science). .
Related to humans in terms of being a mammal, Dolly is a definite possibility of human cloning. Answering the possibility of human cloning, Dr. Wilmut, the scientist who cloned the sheep said, "In theory it could be done, but it would be very difficult, and we don't think it would offer any clinical advantage (Scientist)."".
The technology of human cloning is claimed to reverse heart attacks. Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States and several other industrialized countries such as Germany and Japan. In order to treat heart attack victims, scientists say that they would have to clone their healthy heart cells and inject them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged (Science). In other words, to save one human's life another human would be sacrificed. This already brings out the exploit of a scientific discovery.
Human cloning is also expected to solve the problem of infertile couples that are unaided by other modern, reproductive techniques.
