The Triangle Strike And Fire

The sorority of women attracted organizations such as the Central Federated Union (CFU), the Women's Trade Union League (WTUL), and a branch of the Suffragettes. These organizations then became allies of the women (40). Wealthy women also joined the fight but not with their hands, with their pockets. Among the most generous contributers are Ms. Elizabeth Marbury and Ms. Anne Morgan (43). They weren't just generous; they gave every last cent that they could. The few women that had been accepted into colleges at that time helped out too. There truly was a full representation of every kind of woman. It was not a class-oriented strike. It was ubiquitous among American women at that time. All of the women were helping each other through this great struggle because it was a good cause and it was something that needed to be done.
The women didn't just "preach to the crowd", they took their marches to places like City Hall on December 4th 1909 where they protested that strikers were being arrested under "false pretences". This demonstration before the Mayor did not impress him too much, but what it did was win favorable publicity for their cause (38). The women also held a meeting at the Hippodrome on December 6th 1909 - just two days after the city hall protest. At the Hippodrome Mrs. O.H.P. Belmont, president of the Political Equity Association (PEA), and the projected second wealthiest woman in the country at sixty million dollars, spoke out against the employers. Reverend John Howard Melish spoke out too. Dr. Anna Shaw spoke out in favor of the trade unions. She was quoted as saying, "Personally I believe in trade unions. You can't strike a blow with one finger or two fingers, but when you want to strike you pull all your fingers together, clench them hard, and then let drive" (42). She went on to say that there should be women working everywhere. Women can be helped by women because "The interests of men are not safe in the hands of women, and the interests of women are not safe in the hands of men" (42).
