The Rise And Fall Of John Gotti

Castellano was Carlo's brother-in- law, but the decision outraged many of the soldiers in the family, especially John Gotti because he was very close to Dellacroce.
Under Paul Castellano's leadership the Gambino family continued to grow, but two separate branches were created: Castellano's branch and Dellacroce's branch. Castellano believed in making money for the family through union rackets and bird rigging in construction projects and had Dellacroce branch do all the hijackings and murders. John Gotti was in charge of the area around Ozone Park and his own soldiers included Angelo Riggiero, Willie Boy Johnson and Gotti's younger brother. Rumors had it that Gotti's gang was dealing drugs, and in the Cosa Nostra that's a major sin. When Castellano heard about this he wanted Gotti and his crew killed. Gotti spoke to his crew and explained to them about the penalty they would face if anyone of them were caught dealing. This was big concern for Gotti because he wasn't involved with dealing drugs it was his crew, but if anyone in his crew got caught he was just as guilty they were because he was in charge of his crew. It so happened that the FBI was on to Gotti's crew, and they tapped Ruggiero home phoneline. Ruggiero was caught on tape along with Gotti's younger brother talking about drug dealing and the Gambino family. Castellano was outraged when he heard the tapes. Castellano wanted Gotti dead. Throughout this whole time Gotti had become best of friends with Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, another member of the Gambino family. One day in late September, a message was sent to Gravano stating that Gotti would like to see him. When they met Gotti told him that he wanted to have Paul Catellano killed. A murder of this magnitude had never been done before, because only other acting bosses of the Cosa Nostra family had the authority to remove a boss. Gotti knew that the pressure was on him and his crew, but the only reason they had not taken action against Castellano was because Dellacroce warned Gotti of the danger from the other families that may occur if Castellano was "whacked".
