The Right To Live

Euthanasia is a very controversial subject today and not an easy one for most people to take a stance on, but I believe the direct action of another person to kill someone else is never acceptable, even when the victim is asking for it. Euthanasia can be divided up into several categories. Active euthanasia, which is most commonly debated over, involves a physician or another assistant intentionally killing a patient, usually by means of legal injection. This procedure differs from physician-assisted suicide, where the patient performs the last act. The last act may be swallowing a dose of deadly pills prescribed by a doctor or pushing a button to cause a fatal injection after the doctor has inserted a needle in the patient=s arm. .
Passive euthanasia, on the other hand is legal in America, and is not the result of one human intentional killing another, but letting the patient die as the result of letting the natural courses of life run their course. I agree with this law and believe that every patient has the right to refuse maximum medical help if they wish to die. .
Within the realm of euthanasia also lies voluntary and involuntary euthanasia. Voluntary euthanasia involves the patient=s explicit consent of the death, while involuntary euthanasia occurs when the decision to die is made by someone other than the patient. Non-voluntary euthanasia would occur if a person were unable to express their desires, for example if someone were in a coma. Thus we are left with physician-assisted suicide and the four types of euthanasia, which as described above are: active voluntary euthanasia, active involuntary euthanasia, passive voluntary euthanasia, and passive involuntary euthanasia (Baird 10-11).
Physician assisted suicide, which currently legal only in the state of Oregon and the country of Holland, assumes the victim as performing the final act of the suicide that would not have been possible without the assistance of a doctor (Euthanasia.
