A View From the Bridge

He was unconsciously trying to discourage the idea of Catherine growing up and turning into a working mature woman that is independent of him. Surprised by the amount of money she is going to get paid he reluctantly was persuaded to change his mind.
Stopping Catherine growing up seems to be all what Eddie does when he speaks to her. Name-calling is also one of Eddie's traits calling her "Garbo" among others. When Catherine was wearing a shorter than usual skirt Eddie uses this technique to dampen her spirits of growing up. He also does this when she wore high heels and uses this opportunity to accuses her of "walkin" wavy", saying she is not "one of the girls" so she should act differently. .
In a way to stop her turning into a woman he tries to separate her from Rodolpho as she has more mature feelings towards him rather than childhood friendship. Eddie is jealous of Catherine and Rodolpho's blossoming relationship. His jealousy is based on his feelings towards Catherine. His feelings are more than just one of a fatherly figure but of lust, shown by the way he is shy and pleased when she says "hi" to him. This hostile situation between Rodolpho and Eddie leads Eddie to try and make anything that could lead Catherine and Rodolpho staying in America together be destroyed. Only marriage between Rodolpho and Catherine would let them stay in America together. .
Eddie trying to sabotage this relationship tells Catherine that Rodolpho only wants to marry her for an American citizenship. Catherine denies this but also half believes it. She asks Rodolpho whether she can go live in Italy with him instead of America. Rodolpho refuses this suggestion and he adds that he loves her. In the end Catherine believes him so they decide to marry. Rodolpho's bigger influence on Catherine is threatening to Eddie as he feels he is not the main man in her life anymore. .
Eddie already shows that he doesn't like to have no control over other people.
