Anne Frank and her sad story are remembered; thanks to a diary she kept, while in hiding from the Nazis during World War II. Anne Frank was born on June 12th 1929 in Frankfort am Main, Germany. Her Parents were Otto Frank and Edith Frank. Anne had an older sister Margot. In 1933 Mr. Frank opened a branch of his business in Amsterdam, Holland and moved his family there that summer. In their new country, Mr. Frank believed his family would be safe from the Nazis. Anne attended a nearby Montessori school. She had many friends and was not unlike other girls her own age. Seven years later, the Nazis invaded the Netherlands and in five days, Holland surrendered to the German forces. Anne's father began converting his company into a hiding place for his family. Under Nazis law, Anne was forced to leave her school and attend a Jewish school. .
Anne Frank received a blank diary on her 13th birthday from her parents, just weeks before she and her family went into hiding in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. The diary's universal appeal stems from its blend of wartime and her discussion of emotions familiar to every adolescent. She immediately started writing her intimate thoughts. Her first entry read as follows;.
"I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support.".
She named her diary Kitty and that is whom she wrote to in every entry (Dearest Kitty ).
A few weeks later her sister, Margot received a notice from the Nazi SS to report for work detail at a labor camp. On July 5th, 1942, Anne and her family moved to the "Secret Annex" that her father built behind his former office. When Anne and her family went into hiding from the Nazis, who were victimizing and arresting Jews, the diary went with her. For the two years she spent in hiding, the diary was her confidant and her friend. .
Eight people eventually came to live in the secret annex.
