The Admirable Mr. Loisel

Loisel can be called untruthful and even a coward for him having his wife write a letter lying to Mrs. Forestier. But if one was to look past these flaws in Mr. Loisel, the husband in De Maupassant's "The Necklace", I think one would see an honorable man. Although he is not perfect I think he makes the best of a difficult situation. I believe Mr. Loisel is a respectable man because he is loyal, he works hard, and he is a loving husband.
As this story unfolds I see an attribute of loyalty that most men lack. He is a loyal worker at his job as a clerk in the office of the Board of Education. He remembered "[H]e would have to be at the office by ten o"clock" (68). Even though he stays out with his wife till four o"clock and then searches for the necklace for three more hours, he will be at work on time. He is also loyal to Mrs. Loisel. It takes a strong man to stick with a woman who in one night put them so far in dept. Allot of men would have left her or at least divorced her within the next ten hard years. Mr. Loisel remained loyal to her even though she had lost a necklace that cost an absurd amount of money.
Another reason I admire Mr. Loisel is apart from being loyal; he is very hard working. As Mrs. Loisel danced the night away Mr. Loisel went off to get some rest. "Her husband had been half asleep in one of the little salons since midnight" (68). This shows his willingness to give up pleasure in order to put in a fair day's work the next morning. Also once he owes thirty-six thousand francs he takes up three jobs. "The husband worked evenings, putting the books of some merchants in order, and nights he often did copying at five sous a page" (70). Here one can see his ability to work hard to pay of the dept as quickly as possible. I admire him for paying that much money in such a small amount of time.
Finally, Mr. Loisel's most attractive trait is he is a loving husband. Mr. Loisel does his best to please his wife.
