The American Dream


The narrator of the commercial is talking of "forever" in terms of the name of the perfume "Eternity," but the audience can also assume that he is talking about a simple marriage, a well put together family and the perfect scenery in terms of lasting forever. After the narrator is finished talking about the product, the voice of the little boy comes on and says, "Forever and ever and ever!" This returns the audiences mind to the family aspect of the commercial as if the child knows at !.
             a young age about the way life is and what the American dream is to him. The commercial is also set in a black and white screen. This returns the audiences attention again to the American dream and family by reminding them of the old television shows like "Leave it to Beaver" and "Flipper." These early television shows were not only family based shows, but also in the time period of the 1950's and 1960's, when black and white television screens were used, family value was very important in society. A person was hardly ever divorced, sex was not talked about and dinner was always eaten as a family at the dinner table. Advertisers were brilliant to use this tactic to lure people into department stores to smell their perfume, and hopefully buy it. The consumer would probably feel a sense of success and part of the American dream if they wore this particular perfume. .
             Artist's music lyrics are another way that society views the American dream. John Cougar Melloncamp writes a lot of his songs on the American dream. In his song "Pink Houses," Melloncamp writes about a lower class family's version of the American dream. He writes of a mans wife cleaning up after dinner, while he's wearing a plain tee shirt listening to rock and roll. The audience can imagine a southern couple, best of friends, in their latter years at home on an August night finishing a dinner complete with collard greens. The husband is talking to the wife about how great America is, complete with "little pink houses for the both of them.
