Surrogacy

The author goes into the ethical debate within surrogate motivation and that is the idea of altruism versus remuneration. "The symbol of the pure surrogate who creates a child for love was pitted against the symbol of the wicked surrogate who prostitutes her maternity." (Ragone. 69) This is stating that those "pure" surrogates are against the "wicked" surrogates, which states the idea of altruism precludes remuneration through the use of connotative language by the author. .
Ragone also used logos, logic, to back up her argument on the issue of surrogacy. She backed up her argument with facts and qualified people who supported her ideas. "As one program psychologist explained, the amount paid to surrogates is intentionally held at an artificially low rate by the programs so as to screen out women who might be motivated solely by monetary gain." (Ragone. 67) Another style of language used by Ragone was pathos, an emotional style of writing. "As I have already mentioned, the "gift of life" theme is further enhanced by some surrogates to embrace the near-sacrifice of their own lives in childbirth." (Ragone. 68) By using the words "near-sacrifice" the author is using emotional appeal to get the audience to feel sympathetic towards surrogate mothers. Overall Ragone's use of language illustrated her support for the issue of surrogate motherhood.
The second article, "A Successful Surrogate Arrangement" by Fricks, had the author using pathos language with happiness and hope. The author also used logos and connotative language to express her support on this issue. The author used emotion, pathos, as her way of expressing her view and to show the advantages in surrogacy. "Helping fellow infertile women and couples come to terms with the challenge and stress of infertility and then moving toward alternate ways of building a family or childfree living is both healing and powerful.
