Suffering In "Crime And Punishment"


Rodya knew that this suffering would be bestowed upon him because, in the article that he wrote, he states, "pain and suffering are inevitable for a large intelligence and a deep heart."(230). He knew that if he committed the crime that he would have to suffer as a consequence.
             Raskolnikov's suffering is also due to his recognition of his failure to meet his "extraordinary man" theory. This point is best described by Svidrigailov when he says to Dounia that Raskolnikov, "has suffered a great deal and is still suffering from the idea that he could make a theory, but was incapable of boldly overstepping the law, and so is not a genius. And that's humiliating for a young man of any pride" (403). The fact that he realizes he does not fulfill the requirements of the theory, destroy him. He wishes that everything went perfectly and that he could have left no loose strings. Porfiry Petrovitch is the man who is trying to pressure Rodya to confess to the murder. Porfiry uses Rodya's suffering to try and push him even closer to the edge. Porfiry states, "I am convinced that you will decide to take your suffering - For suffering, Rodion Romanovitch, is a great thing - there's an idea in suffering"(397). By this, Porfiry means that he hopes Rodya's suff!.

             Katerina Ivanovna Marmeladov is also a character that goes through periods of suffering and personal anguish. Her childhood, from what we know, is one of prosperity and joy. Her life took a different turn after she became married and had children. She suffers everyday with the memories of her former life and how one day she hopes to retain her pride and be restored to her .
