Odin and Zeus are the rulers of the gods in different mythologies, but there are many similarities between the two other than just being the leader of the gods. These similarities include appearance, responsibilities, dwelling, manliness, actions and interactions with mortals and gods. These similarities often coincide with one another. Their interaction with mortals shows their manliness and their dwelling helps them in their responsibilities, but each of these similarities will be explored separately in detail throughout this paper. There are so many great similarities between Odin and Zeus that it would take a novel to describe them all so only the important ones, and why they are important, will be discussed here. Zeus and Odin have many great commonalities even though they were the beliefs of completely different people from different regions of the world.
The main similarity, most important and most obvious is their appearance. It is amazing that Odin and Zeus, two gods from different regions and different beliefs, be so similar to each other in appearance. Almost all of the descriptions of the two gods depict them both as large, powerful men. They were not obese or fat gods but rather tall and having a very large muscular build. They are also delineated as having long, bushy beards. The beard is a major factor in that it connects them to the normal, mortal men of earth. The men of earth could obviously grow beards but if the gods had big horns or giant wings, for example, it would remove them from the common mortal and the feeling of attachment the mortal man has with his god of gods would not be nearly as strong. The feeling of attachment kept the mortal man loyal to his god. Their appearance is also similar when it comes to the expression on their faces.
