Searching For Bobby Fisher

Josh never mentions his interest in chess, probably because he knows that his father would begin to obsess over the game. When Fred finds out about Josh's chess talent, he challenges Josh to a game. Not wanting to embarrass his father, and most likely to avoid his father's tendency to push him into competition, Josh purposefully loses. When Fred finds that Josh was not playing to his potential, he forces Josh to play again. This time, Josh beats him without a problem. Smelling opportunity, Fred takes Josh to a professional chess master, Bruce. .
Bruce does not want to have anything to do with the Waitzkins at first, but when he observes Josh playing speed chess in the park, he realizes that Josh is a child prodigy. Bruce knows that Josh's talents are not learned, but intuitive. He teaches Josh strategies, and encourages him to learn by giving him "Master Class Points" for his accomplishments. Bruce forces Josh look further into the game, and teaches him the value of calculated planning. At first, Josh is interested in learning from Bruce, but as the sessions get tougher, and Bruce gets stricter, Josh begins to dislike the game. Bruce begins to convince Josh that the only thing he should concentrate on is chess. He wants Josh enrolled in a special school, he does not want Josh to play baseball, or do anything else that a seven-year old boy would want to do. Bruce even tries to restrict Josh from playing speed chess with his friends in the park, concerned that it would only teach Josh bad habits. Speed chess is Josh's only opportunity to play chess for fun, and he would rather love the game then obsess over perfection. Josh refuses to conform to Bruce's rules, and responds as any child would - to ignore him. Bruce sometimes forgets that Josh is a child, and expects him to be a lot more mature, and when Josh acts his age, Bruce gets frustrated and loses his cool. Josh's parents catch Bruce yelling at the boy and throw him out.
