Shoes


When the war ended fashion took a turn when it went into the 1920's.
             The 1920's were an era of "mass production of affordable synthetic fabrics granting everyone the access to beautiful clothing and shoes. Shoes really became popular though. The Charleston dance had a big foot in the style of shoes. Women wanted safe, small-heeled toe covered shoes. But when the Egyptian King Tutankhamen's tomb was discovered fashion went into a craze and designers put in on everything from furniture to shoes. Brightly colored fabrics and dyed leathers were used to create some of the most exciting shoes ever seen. (1) Very luxurious materials were used such as brocade (a heavy fabric interwoven with a rich, raised design.), satin, silk, and velvets. The heels were very different themselves, made of Bakelite, Wedgwood, Jasperware or leather .
             usually covered in lace and rhinestones. This era was rooted by the styles of Coco Chanel and Mandeleine Vionnet. .
             The 1930's were a big experiment with designers. The depression put a damper on the availability of materials, but never on the styles. The platform shoe made it debut in the late 1930's by Salvatore Ferragamo and Andr`e Perugia. Then were made from wood, cork and other materials, "due to the shortage of leather and a war ban on rubber."(1) "The Art Deco movement heavily influenced shoe styles early in the decade."(1) The middle-Eastern prints were a big thing. Even with the use of the bright colors, somber color like maroon, black, and brown were still used a lot.
             The 1940's were a year of shoes for women. The average women owned at least five pairs of shoes. The bombing of Pearl Harbor changed things and shoes just weren't as important. Because again leather was restricted for military use, materials such as reptile skin and mesh were used for shoes. Women would use household things to make their shoes more interesting, since it was such a hard time.
