Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a very mysterious disease. Many people believe that it is caused by an intruder to the body such as a bacterium, fungi, parasite, or virus. It may be genetic and be passed down through a gene. It may also be caused by the physical surroundings of the individual affected. It has been proven that siblings are more likely to have the disease. .
Schizophrenia is characterized by psychotic fits. These fits may contain delusions, hallucinations, incoherence, catatonic behavior, or a flat effect. Delusions are things that a person believes to be true even when they see evidence that it is not. Hallucinations are sensory perceptions without a stimulus. These may be sounds, tastes, sights, smells, or physical senses of touch. Incoherence is a condition where they are not understandable and are very disordered. Catatonic behavior is hyperactivity that is not related to a stimulus. A flat affect is an appearance of no emotion.
There are four types of schizophrenia. These are catatonic, paranoid, undifferentiated, and residual. Each of these types is characterized by different symptoms. .
Diagnosing this disease is very difficult. In order to make an accurate diagnosis the doctor may consider if the person has a developmental background or family history. Current stress and situations may affect the individual. How well the person functioned before the onset of the disease helps the diagnosis. The individual's response to therapy, and a CT scan are also used to diagnose the disease. The CT scan can reveal enlarged ventricles in the brain which indicate a mental illness. .
Treatment of this disease very often includes hospitalization. The affected individual, in many cases, cannot live a healthy life on their own. They may need assistance in maintaining their basic needs. Group homes or special living environments accomplish this. There are many anti psychotic medications used to prevent many symptoms.
