Poetry - Dylan Thomas

Glow-worms are described as "The things of light" as if they are the bearer and bringer of light. The exuberance in this poem is seen to be this omnipotent light, which awakens even the dead skeletons in their graves and empowers glow-worms to bring the skeleton to life. In this respect the statement can be argued that exuberance in the poems is mainly apparent through the seemingly endless amount enthusiasm Dylan has for his subject matter.
             Another way in which Thomas chooses to elaborately describe his thesis by adding vitality and life to his words. Exuberance is specifically shown in "The Force That Through The Green Fuse", which has extensive reference to life and vitality. The poem shows the uniqueness of life and the power that is possess,.
             "The force that through the green fuse drives the flower.
             Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees".
             Thomas stimulates the senses with exciting forceful words. The words are full of life, movement and motion. The tempo of the poem is fast forcing you to be instantly involved, driving you to contemplate just how almighty nature really can be. The poem talks about how nature has the might to crush a mere mortal,.
             "And I am dumb to mouth unto my veins.
             How at the mountain spring the same mouth sucks".
             This extract signifies how the poem exclaims its omnipotence and exuberance, showing a zest for life and a realistic view into how we should view nature.
             Thomas's florid view of the world around him is quite apparent in his extensive description and tendency to labour the point in his poetry. "The spire cranes" is a very fantastical poem with the fantasy style birds coming to life. The structure of the poem has very long descriptive sentences that pay close attention to detail, bringing the birds to life. The birds are portrayed as being very ornate animals and even though they are stone they somehow possess feathers. Feathers automatically summon images of softness, beauty and purity.
