Poverty

Yes many of these people get help from the government, however they still do not receive enough to bring themselves out of poverty. Some are mentally handicapped, some have come down with an illness, and some have had serious injuries where they cannot return to work. It doesn't matter what happened they still are in poverty and they need to be paid attention to in order to bring our whole nation out of poverty. .
The next one was more relevant in years past then today's society, however discrimination still happens today. In some areas discrimination against race, religion, or sexual orientation can prevent some people from getting jobs. One aspect of discrimination that is starting to happen that really hasn't been addressed is reverse discrimination. Sometimes, because of laws like affirmative action, more qualified individuals are passed up for jobs because of the need for a percentage of that race in their workforce. While this doesn't happen very often it still happens and we need to acknowledge it.
Another factor that nobody really addresses is the fact of the changing of the workforce. Many older individuals find themselves in a bit of a jam. They have been trained all of there life how to do a job then suddenly everything changes. The jobs are different, the new aspects of the job, and so forth comes as a shock to the individual. They now have been torn from something they knew how to do and we changed it and they have no clue how to do their job. Imagine working at a job as a janitor then being thrown in to being a stockbroker. They now have the need to go back to school and receive new training, but many do not so they are left without a job. .
The effects of poverty, just like the causes, are many. One of the biggest effects is that when people are not making money the government gives them money and doesn't receive taxes from them. If these individuals could attain jobs and get out of poverty, then the government wouldn't have to spend taxpayer dollars on keeping these people afloat.
