What is an Icon?

What is an icon? Many people have different views about the meaning of an icon; to me I think icons are just like role models. After reading the essay "Heroine Worship the age of the female icon" by Holly Brubach I thought about many different icons that were important to me. The first icon that came to my mind was my sister but I can not write about her because she is not famous, so then I thought about someone that was like her and had many of the same characteristics. Princess Diana is an icon that has made an impact on many peoples lives young and old. In Brubach's essay she explains how some female icons are looked up upon to compare their self to but could never strive to be them. She shows how people look up to icons as more of what there looks are and not the good they have done or the kind of heart they have. Throughout this essay I will be disproving the reasons why Brubach thinks of a female icon using the late Princes Diana. .
"Diana was a celebrity royal. She was a movie star who never actually appeared in a movie"(Internet). Diana's life was basically a movie with paparazzi all around her at all times. Diana has dominated the world in so many areas with her sparkling eyes that almost say don't hurt me, her beautiful smile and her loving personality not only towards her children but to every child she encountered with. Princess Diana is more than a beautiful woman, but a Princess that has been admired for her integrity and perseverance to the world. "Whereas women may look at an icon like Raquel Welch, whose appeal is clearly to the male half of humanity"(Brubach 413). This particular quote is saying how men see icon's different than women, and how females just look up to them for there looks. This is not true in Diana's case this wonderful female is looked upon for all the great things that she has given back to this world. .
"An icon is a human sound bite, an individual reduced to a name, a face and an idea"(Brubach 412).
