Declaration of Independence

This new government that they would adopt was based on the people. It would be made up of representatives selected by the people. This gave the people a say in what was to happen in their country. Many steps were taking by the colonists to take back control of their country even before the Declaration of Independence was adopted including attempts by the First Continental Congress to call for a boycott of all British goods. (Steps Leading to the American Revolution 42). The new democratic government was one of the biggest reasons why I felt that if I had the opportunity, I would sign it.
In order to keep control over the colonists, the English took control of all trade in and out of the colonies. The English used the mercantilist theory in which the colonies were only there to enrich the mother country by supplying resources and providing markets for British goods (Steps Leading 40). Mercantilism was a popular economic system in Europe during the 1600-1700s. The English Parliament had passed many acts that took control of colonial trade. They cut off trade with the rest of the world and independence for England would open things back up. The Staple Act was passed in order to make profit from American trade. All goods coming from America would have to go through the British merchants thus providing England with profit. (Steps Leading 40). Another such act which restricted trade was the Navigation Act which made it illegal for the colonists to trade with the rest of Europe without going the Britain first (Steps Leading 40). These acts, as well as the Wool and Molasses Acts, took control of trade in America so that England could make as much profit as possible from the imports and exports. America made England an giant economic trading block in which most American trade occurred. The Declaration of Independence stated many of the faults of the king, one of which was cutting of trade with the rest of the world.
