Hellenistic Period

As already known the city states were constantly arguing over one thing or another, and this was not the way to create a union among the people. Thus, there was no military that protected the population from any danger and it was this that helped the Persians and the Macedonians start their domination. Only when truly threatened with loosing their land would they fight together as allies. And than what happened? They started once again to fight amongst themselves and it was this that began the Pelopenneisian War and the end of Hellenic times. Although they did have a very good navy, this was not enough. A country cannot be protected using only pure force. They have to be capable of thinking for themselves and be resourceful in order to be victorious. The Hellenistics were all these things and that is why they conquered as many lands as they did. And while the military was an extremely significant part of the Hellenistic society, no civilization can stand on its own without some form of government.
During this period the government stayed in the form of a monarchy. This is quite the opposite of the past in which the Greeks seemed to like change. In the early stages of politics, Greece had a very primitive form of law and it soon changed. Aristocrats began to rule the lands, but given time were overthrown by the Hopelites, who reigned largely due to the fact that they had found ways to create wealth for themselves. They, in turn lost power to the commons, which began democracy. This shows a pattern of uncertainty on the part of the rulers. Would they have all been seized if they had known what was best for the society? While a monarchy does not sound ideal to a society such as ours you must remember that this may have been the best form in order to have a safer and more pleasurable place to live. This was in the ancient times after all, and things were different. Aside from having the same form of government for most of the period, there was also the fact that it must have been much easier for the people to live in a monarchy rather than a tyranny or an oligarchy system, as was the case for the others.
