Nutrition in Sport

In today's sporting world, there are very few differences between top class athletes. They have similar diets, training techniques and equipment. A psychological edge over your opponents could be the difference between winning and losing.
In preparation for a basketball match, an athlete would use multiple methods to get their heads in the right frame of mind for the event.
The first way he could do this would be through motivation, which is an internal state which activates, directs and sustains behaviour towards achieving a particular goal.
The player could motivate themselves by using one of three motivation techniques.
-The first method is intrinsic motivation, which is motivation from inside the individual, and he could do this by setting himself small individual tasks/goals for the match such as sinking every shot he attempts or staying on the court for longer time period than usual without being interchanged or substituted.
-The second method is extrinsic motivation, which comes from outside sources such as a players contract. A player may motivate himself pushing themselves to show selectors that they are quality players and therefore are worthy of a contract in let's say the National Basketball Association (NBA).
-The third and final method is social material and internal reinforcement, which is an award or punishment, such as trophies or most valuable player awards or simply being praised by family and friends for a good performance.
A player may set a goal for the season to win the best and fairest award, they could be motivated by the thought of praise and celebration after the match has ended or they may become motivated themselves simply through the want for inner satisfaction with ones performance after the match.
Another way to psychologically prepare oneself would be to attempt to eradicate any form of anxiety in the body's mind. Anxiety is a psychological process that causes the individual to have a fear or apprehension in anticipation of confronting a situation, which would result in a poor performance in a sporting aspect due to these "nerves".
