             On his return home he found his family's influence had grown weak and his decision to follow his late father into politics or work with his older brother at a law office hardly seemed prudent. Also his mother, whom he described as "saintly" (essential Gandhi) So, in April of 1893, accepting an offer to serve as an attorney in South Africa for an Indian Moslem trading firm owned by Dada Abdullah. Once again leaving behind his wife Kasturba and (by that time) his two small sons.
             It was early in his stay in South Africa that he was forced to confront the wrath of European racism. The Indians there without political rights and were far from being considered full human beings. Mohandas was once thrown out of a railway car although he held a first-class ticket, and he was forcibly removed to the van car, where the "colored" people rode.
             The degradation of being less than 2nd class, imposition of a poll tax on them, and the government's declaration that all non-Christian marriages (Web) were invalid all proved to enrage Mohandas. (Gold) This political awakening that sparked life long pursuit for independence and equality. He was to remain in South Africa for nearly 20 years. He was successful in his efforts to procure a better life for the Indian immigrants in South Africa. This rightfully earned Mohandas a reputation as a respected man of the people and a leader in the Indian community.
             Upon his return to India he traveled widely for a year, becoming familiar with local struggles and reacquainting himself with the Indian way of life. His interventions in these disputes earned Mohandas an exalted reputation and he rose to the leadership of nationalistic politics. It was at this time he was deferred the title of Mahatma or Great Soul. At his urging the Indians began to withdraw from British institutions, to return honors deposed by the British, and learned the art of self-reliance. In places the administration was paralyzed, but after the atrocious killings of several policemen caused the movement to pause.
