Lost In The Barrens

They stayed the night on a sand bank and at the next morning Denikazi and the others went on without Jamie and Awasin. He left them behind with two of his men and told them not to follow him. .
The two boys did what the headman had said but soon Jamie was bored and he persuaded Awasin to follow the others. First Awasin didn't want but his friend drove downstream and so he had no choise. He drew a symbol in the sand to inform the others about their plan and followed Jamie.
They paddled some hours along the stream but suddenly the current of the river became stronger and Jamie ramed a rock wih his canoe. Awasin wanted to help him but he came in a rapid too. .
With much luck both got washed on a sand bank. Jamie had a big wound on his leg and both were very weak and tired. They searched for their equipment and slept the night on the beach in the hope that the two Chipeweyans would find them because of the symbol, which Awasin had made. .
On the next morning they decided not to wait and to search for a way home. But Jamie was too weak to go and so Awasin left him behind with some food and the rifle. After a few hours he came back and told Jamie that Eskimos were near and that they had to flee. They put the most important things and hid in the Great stone house, a building which the Eskimos wouldn't enter.
After he was sure that the Eskimos were away Awasin went hunting. Standing on the top of a hill and looking over the plains he suddenly saw a big swarm of ravens, which was a signal for a herd of deers. He ran down and shot some of the animals. So they had enough food for the next days and from the skin of the deers they made cloth and mocasins. .
With new strenght they decided to follow the tracks of the deers the other way round, because they thought that they could find the hunters this way. But meanwhile the other Indians had left their camp because they also fled from the Eskimos and so they didn't meet.
