Once they arrive home, Marmee addresses the problem. She writes him a letter indicating that Amy will no longer be attending school there. She will be home schooled as Beth has been.
The following day, as the four girls are acting out the most recent edition of Jo's script, Lawry sneaks away from his tutor, (whom Meg has taken a liking to) to join the girls as Mr. Rodrigo. Beth, Meg, and Amy think that Jo has made a horrible mistake, since while they are acting they don't act very lady-like, as they were taught to around men. .
Jo and Meg receive an invitation to join Lawry and John (his tutor) at an actual Theatre. Amy is angry because she wanted to go. When they arrive home, Mr. Brooks and Meg begin to talk about there future. Behind the bush, Jo and Lawry cautiously spy on them,.
When Jo settles down to do some more writing late into the night, she has a hard time fining the manuscript. Little Amy decided to burn it, to get back on her for not taking her to the Theatre. Jo and Amy have a huge fight, and they decide never to talk to each other again.
When morning comes, Jo and Lawry go ice-skating on Walden Pond, which has just froze over. Amy decides to join them, just before Jo and Lawry start, Amy shouts " wait for me" but they ignore her. They start out, and all of a sudden they hear a sound of breaking ice, Amy has fell through. They rush to her aid, although very cold she is going to be okay. .
The following spring Meg attends a "coming out" ball. Beth sews her a dress, and she has to borrow one of Marmee's gloves because she has lost hers, the other girls decide to dress poor old Meg up in really fancy dress. Lawry is to show her off to everybody. She is admired and praised, like she has never been before.
Lawry gets ready to go to Harvard College, Jo is worried she will never get to see him again. She also doesn't like the idea that he will come back knowing a lot of new stuff that she has never heard of.
