ince marijuana was made an illegal narcotic, there have been many arguments over its illegal status. Then why is such a commonly used drug such a problem to most people? Well, the answer may be that not everyone fully understands what happens to a person when he or she is intoxicated from marijuana. Marijuana is a rather harmless drug compared to the legal drugs that aren't controlled by the law. Marijuana does not cause serious addiction like alcohol and nicotine that are legalized drugs, granting the user the right to quite at any time without problems of withdrawal. In conclusion, legalizing marijuana would put the eyes" of the law on more important issues, rather than the innocent American citizen who decides to use marijuana. .
Many political leaders say that once we legalize Marijuana that will open up the door for other drugs to be legalized. During the late 1800's narcotics were sold freely, and many popular patent medicines contained narcotics. One of the most common drugs that were used was cocaine. Cocaine was used in asthma remedies, toothache drops, and even soft drinks (Bender 8). After the government realizes the negative effects it was having on people and their behavior many states passed laws to restrict it. .
America has been fighting this drug war for many years. President Ronald Reagan signed several different anti drug laws during his presidency. Then in 1989 president George Bush announced a four-part plan to fight illegal drugs. The presidents" 1993 budget allocated about $15.8 billion for all law enforcement programs, which included hiring more drug agents for The Drug Enforcement (Bender). Many feel that we should stop spending tax dollars on fighting against people that smoke or sell marijuana.
There have been many arguments on why marijuana shouldn't not be legal but I would have to disagree. Why shouldn't you be able to use marijuana as you use alcohol? It does the same thing and that is relaxes the mind and body.
