The main character in the novel is Weili. She tells her life story to her daughter, Pearl. Weili is married to a cocky pilot named, Wen Fu, and this marriage has terrible consequences. Later, she leaves him and marries a translator named, Jimmy Louie. Her life is a struggle against all odds. The challenges that she faces in her life, transforms her into a confident and independent woman. Through her own story she wants to express the qualities of courage and positive thinking to her daughter, Pearl.
Conflict.
The antagonist in the novel is Wen Fu, the first husband of Weili. He is the man responsible for the depression in Weili's life. In the early days of marriage, he tries to act like a loving husband to Weili but after a few days he shows this true self. The way he treats his wife is as if she were his toy; does anything he pleases. Every night Wen Fu completely humiliates Weili. Wen Fu is extremely violent to her. He rapes her and then forces her to make her say that she needs him badly. In spite of all this, Weili tries to be a good wife to him. But when he continues to humiliate and disgrace her and kills her children, she decides to leave him. Even after she leaves him, Wen Fu still does not leave her alone. He tries his best to ruin her second marriage and win her back. .
Conflict Resolution.
All of Weili's troubles were resolved when she met a man by the name of Jimmy Louie It all started when Wen Fu makes his last attempt to completely destroy Weili's life. Weili had made plans to go to the US the next day. When Wen Fu found out about this he went up to Weili and accuses her of being a disloyal wife . Wen Fu tears the divorce papers, which Weili had tricked him to sign. Then he rapes her at gunpoint. But when Weili quickly grabs the gun and was ready to shoot him he managed to escape. If he hadn't ran Weili would have shot him. Her act of bravery gave her strength to go to the US and meet up with Jimmy Louie.
