Killer Bees

African queens can mate with the European male bees, so for each of the 26 queen bees that escaped, there could be 26 hives contaminated by Africanized honey bees. From there the number of Africanized bees has grown to unimaginable proportions.
The bees spread as far South as Northern Argentina then stopped. The bees are only adapted to tropical and subtropical climates. They have been moving North 200 to 300 miles a year. By the 1980's the bees had reached Central America and soon colonized Mexico. The bees kept moving, they reached Texas in October of 1990. In October of 1993 the bees were discovered in New Mexico and by the end of June were in Arizona. California was found with them in 1994 and Nevada in 1999. The bees are still continuing to move North. It is hard to be accurate but hopefully the bees will stop before reaching Wisconsin due to the change in climate.
It takes an Africanized honey bee colony generally about two or three years to become established. Before the bees are established they do not show their trademark defensive behavior because they do not have a home and young to protect. Since most area in the U.S. are still relatively new we can learn a lot by looking at Mexico which has had established colonies for over a decade. .
Agriculture is greatly influenced by beekeeping. In Mexico there are approximately 30,000 hive rentals each year. Hives are very important because without them to pollinate the crops the produce will be less in number and sometimes too small or misshaped for U.S. markets. .
As a result of the hybridization of the bees, many changes had to occur in beekeeping. Africanized honey bees have a tendency to abscond or abandon their hives when resources and food gets too scarce. Beekeepers have to keep aware of this fact and feed syrup to the hives during times of low food. There is more danger involved with Africanized honey bees so workers are required to wear bee suits which are hot in the sun.
