James Joyce

Each of us have our own way in dealing with the problems in our lives. Most of the time these problems set off our emotions. We tend to feel envious towards others. Each one of us handle the situations differently. But sometimes, the solutions aren't always the answer to those problems. James Joyce shows these problems. The way he shows us this is by showing how people in situations deal with paralysis and escape. .
A story by Joyce called "A little cloud" shows how a man by the name of Chandler dreams of being famous. In a sense he is living in the clouds of his own thoughts and dreams. "Every step brought him nearer to London, father from his own sober inartistic life". What I think he means by this statement is that he feels like a nobody. By reading poetry by Byron he's focusing on Byron's ideas. Poetry is supposed to be unique, things about your own life to share. But he had nothing unique about his life. What was he actually doing to get to London?. .
Chandler was a married man with a child. He probably felt like his current life stopped him from achieving his goal of being a poet. He didn't see how much work it needed to get to that point. He wasn't like his friend Gallaher. Gallaher was a man that traveled, had a good job that he actually liked. Chandler was just a normal guy. In a sense Gallaher belittled Chandler and in a way intimidated him. The problem with Chandler is that he creates too many illusions. That makes it seem like all his life is or will ever be is an illusion. In my opinion, Chandler seemed like a shy, lonely type of person.
At one point in the story, Gallaher asks Chandler if he had any children, "Any youngsters? said Ignatius Gallaher, little Chandler blushed again. We have one child he said". Blushing is a sign of shyness and Chandler shows that side of him. He's also a man who dreams of being a poet but he doesn't seem to think about the process it takes to reach that goal.
