Jackie Robinson


In the Army Robinson completed Officer Candidate School and became a Second Lieutenant (34). In 1944 Robinson faced a court-martial for refusing to move to the rear of an Army bus (42). Robinson was just trying to prove that whites are not superior to blacks and everyone should be treated equally. Later he!.

             After leaving the Army, Robinson wanted to play his favorite sport, baseball. He tried out for many teams in the Negro League and was finally drafted by the Kansas City Monarchs (Kahn 67). There were not many teams in the Negro League, which made for a lot of traveling. Although Robinson did not like the lifestyle of always being on the road, he loved the game of baseball. He and his teammates would have to withstand the racial tensions everywhere they went (71). His teammates would often yell back nasty comments that would just provoke the whites. Robinson was always the leader in telling his teammates to just ignore their comments (76). Many whites had never seen a man react in such a tranquil way. A local newspaper reporter says Robinson would often call these comments "silly- (Elderkin). While playing in the Negro Leagues scouts would be secretly sent out to find the most talented black baseball player (Elderkin). Most scouts were impressed with Robinson; not onl!.

             Robinson met with the Dodgers' manager, Branch Rickey, on August 28, 1945, to review his signing terms to the LA Dodgers (Ladson 121). The meeting was important because Rickey made sure Robinson would be able to withstand the pressure of being the first black man in the major leagues (124). With honor he accepted the challenge, and in 1946 entered "organized baseball- (128). The first team he played for was the Montreal Royals; the Dodgers' farm team (James 114).
