Until his brothers' death, Henry was deliberately kept from the public eye. Much more time was spent on Arthur's preparation to the throne, so Henry 's thrust into the spotlight became a shock. Henry was educated with intent of him joining the church, not on becoming a king. In his younger years, Henry was good-looking, athletic, generous, people oriented, but hot-tempered. While he aged, so did his personality traits. He became obese, foul smelling, jealous, and harsh. .
His first wife was the widow of his brother. Her name was Katherine of Aragon. Henry's father insisted on keeping the alliance with Spain, so he summoned the pope to go against the scripture and grant his son to marry his brother's widow. After many months, the pope granted the marriage and the two were married. Henry would later use the same scripture to nullify the marriage to Katherine. During the course of their marriage, Henry and Katherine had one child. It was a daughter and her name was Mary. This is the only heir that Katherine was able to produce for Henry. Henry was not satisfied. King Henry VIII longed for a male heir to the throne and due to Katherine's inability to bear a male heir; Henry looked to the church for an approval of a divorce. Henry claimed that he never should have been able to wed Katherine citing it forbade in the church scriptures. Since the pope personally approved the marriage, the church would not sway in the favor of Henry. When their approval never came, Henry decided to separate from Catholic Church and form The Church of England. After his marriage ended, Henry moved on to his second wife, Ann Boyelyn, who was already pregnant with his child. .
After bearing only a daughter for Henry, Anne Boleyn was no longer the center of Henry's desire. Knowing that the church could not grant him another divorce, Henry's ways became more creative in the dissolving of his marriage. Knowing that Anne was strong willed and heightened hostility; he grew impatient and tired of her very quickly.
