Ethnic, religious and ideological conflicts are strongly related to the concept of nationalism. These kind of conflicts almost define nationalism and what it is all about. Different people identify with separate religions, ethnic and ideological groups. Creating huge conflicts of interest.
Conflicts over territories and borders are the most common in international disputes. Territorial disputes are most strongly connected with nationalism. Territory is anything from homeland, borders, to territorial waters to airspace. Any area which a country controls and values for its bargaining ability is likely to ignite nationalistic disputes when that area is threatened. Homeland is a highly valued commodity and is looked at with fanatical devotion. Territories and borders symbolize the integrity of the state and because of this, is valued higher than any economic or strategic value. People will do anything to protect their borders and land. When an outside party comes in and tries to take over foreign land, there will always be confrontation. You can't disrespect a person more than coming to their home and trying to takeover their land or borders. That is why nationalism to a state oftentimes States will never give away land peacefully, for money or any other reward. States also never forget territory that was lost involuntarily, due to war or military persuasion. This concept leads to a form of nationalism called irredentism. Irredentism is the goal or act of regaining territory that was lost to another state. "Regaining lost territory is a matter of national honor and a symbol of the sovereignty and territorial integrity that defines statehood." The exception to land devotion is colonies. Since colonies aren't a part of the homeland, they are looked at as extra valuables that enrich a nation. Colonies are viewed as the "extras" that can be traded, bought, sold, won or lost.
