Inclusion

There are many apparent benefits to the concept of inclusion; benefits to all different groups of students within the inclusive classroom. The specific benefit to the students being included is that if the atmosphere within the classroom is good then the students" self-esteem escalates. Some apparent benefits have also been: acceptance of all, enhancement of ability to deal with special needs of other students, learning to handle working with different students, and many others ( Tichenor, S.M., & Heins, B., & .
Piechura-Couture, K., 2000). One practice seen often in inclusive classrooms is the idea of having an extra teacher present; one that is skilled in working with special needs students. This concept is called co-teaching. The presence of an extra teacher within the classroom adds new perspectives and a better teacher student ratio. Within the inclusive classroom the teaching strategy is generally more hands on with a greater degree of class participation. The children within these classrooms seem to benefit from the different approach. Studies show that children learn and retain better when they are more actively involved in what is going on in the classroom rather than watching from a distance.
We have discussed already the many benefits of inclusion, so now we must look at the downfalls. The obvious downfall has been that many schools do not find it necessary to properly educate their teachers on inclusion and yet expect them to practice it. This results in a burden on the teacher and a hindrance to the students. It is sad to see such a positive idea in such a negative light. In some cases the students with mild handicaps showed a lower level of self-esteem after involvement in an inclusive classroom atmosphere. The reason for this may be that the student was not properly included, which can do more harm than good. There are instances reported where a child with mild disabilities is placed in a regular classroom only to be singled out by not doing what the rest of the class was working on.
