Henry VIII


The league was constructed by Wolsey, and had little success. The Holy league's goal was to expel Louis XII from Italy; it failed when Julius II died(Holy league). The election of Charles V, the grandson of King Ferdinand, made him Holy Emperor of Rome. England's power was now seen as a secondary one. Henry VIII joined Charles in a war against France in 1522(Henry VIII). Charles won a victory i!.
             n 1525 and he denied England any of the goods he conquered(Henry VIII). Wolsey the most powerful minister had to take the blame for most of England's problems. Wolesy's downfall came about when he failed to give Henry VIII and Catherin of Aragon a divorce(Henry). .
             In the 1530's Henry VIII started to become more involved with the government. He greatly altered western Christianity; he separated the church of England from Roman Catholicism(Henry). The separation came about partly because Henry's need to have a son, and the love he felt for Anne Boylen. He needed to get a divorce for Catherine of Aragon, so he separated the Churches because without the influence of Roman Catholics the pope could secure an annulment without having to worry about Holy Emperor of Rome, Charles V(Henry VIII). The break from Rome caused the Dissolution of the Monasteries, in which Henry sold monk land, and the monks living there would be disbanded or imprisoned(The History). The land was sold to crown or nobility, and the money was put into the royal treasury(Henry). The break from Rome also caused the English Reformation(Koeller). During the reformation the separation of Rome would mean Henry VIII would become the head of the Church of England through the act of Supremacy(Koeller). He did this by passing 137 statutes in seven years and exercised his influence greatly(Henry). The break from Rome was accomplished through law; Henry didn't completely rework the religion, but instead made slight changes. All public officials were required to publicly approve the separation from Rome, by taking an oath of loyalty(Henry).
