Grapes of Wraith

In some areas of the United States and within certain consumer industries employment actually was up and work was steady as well as promising (Suchman 2). Some faired well but the overall statistics proved that the depression was nothing to be ignored. By 1933 an all time high of twenty-five percent of the labor force was jobless. The unemployment rate continued to stay in the double digits until 1940 when World War II supplied jobs for the masses (Samuelson 1).
Unfortunately, for many the only hopes for survival were rumors of prosperous lands in the west. The Joads, as well as thousands of other families, were forced to leave the homes they lived in and the lands they farmed on for many generations (Hinton 1). Others who could not afford to travel or simply those who chose not to move lived in makeshift shelters for years living on next to nothing in order to make it through the hard times (Palmer 2). Young family members often times took to the roads and the rails on their own fearing that they were a burden to be taken care of for their families. The lucky ones met people along the way who felt compassion for the young hoboes traveling on their own and took them in giving them clothing and shelter for a period of time. Several programs began to show up around the country to help these travelers. A couple such as the Civilian Conservation Corps and the National Youth Administration helped to relieve the pain and sufferings of many but were limited by what they could afford. Other young adults who were not so lucky were abused and locked up by cruel and unforgiving rail officials and police officers (Biles 2).
The Joads loaded up a raggedy old truck to its limits and with very little room to spare show their love and compassion for others even before beginning their journey by taking the old preacher, Jim Casy, along with them (Hinton 2). The long journey west to California would not go uneventful.
